Introduction
Geocell is a kind of geosynthetics which is welded by ultrasonic with HDPE or Polymer Nanocomposites Alloy strips.It has a honeycomb structure which improves the service life of the driveway.So the geocell for road is also called driveway gravel grid.
When a load acts on the foundation surface of driveway, based on “Terzaghi and Prandtl's theories”, the following occurs under a concentrated load:
- The “active zone”of the foundation compresses and settles under pressure, transferring the load laterally to the **transition zone**, which then transmits it to the “passive zone”. Consequently, the passive zone is prone to deformation and heaving under force.
However, under concentrated loading, while the active zone of road still transfers external forces to the transition zone, the lateral movement of the passive and transition zones is restrained by:
1. “Confinement from the geocell sidewalls”;
2. “Reactive forces between adjacent cells”;
3. “Frictional resistance between the cell walls and fill material”.
This restraint enhances the road subgrade's bearing capacity. Tests show that, due to mutual confinement between cells, the **cohesion of medium-density sand can increase by over 30 times**. This demonstrates that improving the overall shear resistance of the subgrade material or restricting movement in the active, transition, and passive zones effectively boosts foundation bearing capacity—“the fundamental principle of honeycomb geocells”.
