Geocell used in retaining wall
Geocell flexible retaining wall is a new type of supporting structure constructed using geocell materials, characterized by excellent flexibility and adaptability. Its specific construction involves unfolded geocells and fixing them at designed positions, then filling them with granular materials such as sand or soil. The three-dimensional grid structure of the geocell constrains and reinforces the fill materials, forming an integrated retaining structure with strong stability and adaptability to foundation deformation. Compared with concrete structures, this retaining wall not only demonstrates good stability and resistance to rainwater erosion on steep slopes, but also reduces costs by over 50%. Additionally, its surface can be vegetated with plants for environmental beautification.
Research primarily focuses on determining applicable conditions and structural configurations through various indoor/outdoor model tests and prototype tests of multi-layered honeycomb geocell flexible cushion retaining walls. The analysis reveals that as bearing structures, honeycomb geocell flexible cushions align their material plane with the direction of major principal stress σ1. When filled with sand or other materials, geocells form a composite "mesh-plus-stone" structure with the fill. During installation, geocells should be expanded and backfilled sequentially from bottom to top, with plastic screws providing enhanced connection strength. Local materials can be utilized for filling.
The main advantages of this retaining wall include:
1.High Strength
Geocells effectively constrain and enhance the mechanical properties of fill materials, endowing the wall with high bearing capacity and shear strength.
2.Superior Adaptability
It can accommodate foundation differential settlement through controlled displacement, reducing wall failure risks in geologically complex areas prone to subsidence.
3.Eco-Friendliness
Utilization of local soil as fill material minimizes environmental impact during construction.
4.Rapid Construction
Compared with traditional rigid retaining walls, geocell flexible walls offer significantly faster and more convenient installation processes.
